Have Any Questions?
FAQ's
Are online piano lessons as effective as in-person piano lessons?
Online lessons are actually better than in-person lessons. Taking a virtual lesson is as convenient as sitting down at your piano with your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Multiple camera angles make it easier to see several perspectives simultaneously. Moving anytime soon? You’ll never have to say goodbye to your teacher if you relocate to a new city. These are just a few of the things that make online lessons unique!
Do I need a lot of expensive equipment to get started with online lessons?
Absolutely not. Although online lessons work best with a computer, you can easily take virtual lessons on your phone or tablet. All you need is a free Zoom account and your teacher will make the rest of the magic happen.
What will I get in addition to my weekly lesson? What am I paying for?
Your weekly lesson appointment is just a small portion of the benefits that come from being a member of Dorrough Piano Studio. Your teacher has created an entire library of video lessons that can be shared as needed to reinforce concepts mid-week. You get free membership in a music practice app where assignments, recordings, and practice tips are shared regularly. Virtual student performance opportunities are provided each term, and there are even competitions that you can enter. Your teacher also stays in touch with students throughout the week, answering any questions and coordinating upcoming events.
Do you teach adults?
Yes! The adult years are one of the most rewarding times to study piano. Adult students often get the most fulfillment and enjoyment out of lessons because they have made the independent decision to learn something they’ve always wanted to do.
Do you teach beginners?
Every person has to start somewhere. Although I have many years of experience performing and teaching, I thoroughly enjoy working with beginning students who have a love for the piano.
What is is the age that children should begin lessons?
It is typically recommended that children begin piano at the age of six or seven. Up until this point, children are still developing their fine motor coordination. Can your child hold objects without dropping them, color within the lines, and shape their letters well? Certain developmental skills are also important. Can your child count? Music is based on mathematical patterns. Can they read? Beginning music instruction books require some ability to remember and recognize music symbols and directions.
It is also important to consider if your child is emotionally ready. Do they seem excited about the piano/music. Does your child accept instructions you given them? Do they have the attention span to focus on an activity for an extended period of time? These are all important considerations. The correct age to begin will vary from student to student. Visit the contact page to request a complimentary readiness assessment.
Do I need a piano to get started?
To enroll in lessons with me you’ll at least need a digital piano/keyboard to get started. There are many affordable options. An acoustic piano or digital piano with weighted keys is best for the development of good piano technique. As you progress, you may wish to upgrade to a better instrument, but it is completely fine to begin with something basic. Please let me know if you need help choosing a piano prior to beginning lessons.
What payment methods do you accept?
All lessons are billed via an email invoice and payment link. You may pay with credit card or PayPal. You’ll also have access to an online portal where you can login to view your tuition balance, attendance, invoices, and payment history. All of these records are made accessible for you to view at any time.
What if I miss a lesson?
When you sign up for lessons, you are agreeing to keep the same weekly lesson time each week. If you need a permanent lesson time change, this can typically be accommodated. However, no refunds or make-up lessons are given if you miss one of your regular lessons.
If you know that you will miss a lesson, you are welcome to submit a video of your playing to me prior to your absence, and I’ll return constructive feedback to you with tips to keep you progressing until our next lesson. This allows me to keep a consistent schedule of students and focus on what matters most—providing well-planned quality instruction.
